
OHS Program Fundamentals Module 8: Intro to Joint Health & Safety Committees

Description
This course provides an introductory overview of the purpose, structure, and function of Joint Health and Safety Committees (JHSCs). Participants will explore legal requirements, committee roles and composition, and the development of terms of reference. The course also covers how JHSC members contribute to inspections, investigations, and the resolution of safety concerns, including work refusals. Learners will gain insight into conducting effective meetings, drafting meaningful recommendations, and fulfilling communication duties within the workplace. Mandatory training requirements for JHSC members are also addressed to ensure compliance and effectiveness.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
By the end of this element, learners will be able to:
- Describe the purpose, legal requirements, and composition of JHSCs, including roles of employers, workers, co-chairs, and seasonal employees
- Explain the development and contents of JHSC terms of reference
- Outline JHSC responsibilities in inspections, investigations, safety concerns, and work refusals
- Describe how to conduct effective meetings, including required documentation and communication with workers and employers
- Explain how to develop and share JHSC recommendations with employers
- Identify mandatory training requirements for all JHSC members
