Description

This course provides a practical approach to developing and implementing safe work procedures (SWPs) and written instructions to ensure a safe workplace. Participants will learn how to incorporate risk assessment findings into SWPs, address emergency response planning for various scenarios, and understand hazardous materials under WHMIS. The course also covers essential first aid program elements, conducting first aid assessments, and strategies for evaluating and improving the effectiveness of SWPs.

Note: This course does not replace WHMIS training, but it is a valuable starting point for building a strong foundation when implementing a WHMIS program in your workplace. 

LEARNING OUTCOMES: 
By the end of this element, learners will be able to: 
  • List components of a Safety Management System
  • Describe how to develop safe work procedures (SWP) based on information found during the risk assessment process
  • Describe elements of emergency response plans and how to address different emergency scenarios
  • Explain what are considered hazardous materials and how to follow Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
  • List all elements required for a first aid program and how to conduct first aid assessments
  • Explain how to implement and evaluate safe work procedures in order to enhance the overall workplace safety culture 

TARGET AUDIENCE: 
  • Supervisors, managers, or others who are responsible for developing and enforcing safe work procedures
  • Safety champions and/or JHSC members involved in emergency planning and WHMIS
  • Individuals involved in implementing first aid or emergency response programs
